The city was founded by Spanish crusaders (1848). American settlers arrived in 1900 which resulted in the city's growth of farms, transportation and communications. Japanese plantation owners arrived in 1903 and were responsible for developing abaca and coconut plantations and teaching the Filipinos better methods of cultivation. Agriculture remains an important part of the city's economy.
