Father Purdy's Letters

November - December 2006

One of the great apostolic works we are privileged to carry out is that of the prison. Armed with a great desire to seek the lost souls and bring them to Christ, Legion members bravely enter the prison. At present there are over 130 attending our catechism classes. There have been baptisms, the sacrament of penance administered, Holy Mass and Communion distributed, and enrollments of many scapulars. During the Million rosaries campaign, there were over 150 prisoners reciting together the rosary everyday. The wardens also prayed with the prisoners and noticed the rosary helps keep law and order!!

A Junior Legion was also established which has their weekly meetings on Sundays after Mass. There are over 20 members in this group of little apostles.

Fr. Adam Purdy came in August 2005 to take over the headship of the Novitiate from Fr. Gerspacher. He took over as well the design and planning of the construction of the Bacolod church. By then, our funds was growing with the financial assistance given by our Filipino – American benefactors led by a couple who are Traditional faithful themselves from California., USA It is by God’s grace that they came to visit Bacolod and knew of the existence of the Traditional Mass in the city. Indeed, God helps those who help themselves

Fr. Purdy led the ground breaking of the church in February 25, 2006. The construction started in the first week of May 2006. It is through his effort that the church will soon see its completion. The church blessing was in September 24, 2006 with no less than Bishop Richard Williamson officiating assisted by Fr. Couture and Fr. Purdy. From then on, we had the mass in the church every Sunday.

“Our group is of ordinary individuals armed with the desire to propagate the faith. As Fr. Purdy would like to put it, our mission is two – fold, namely, to impart piety and increase understanding. We, therefore, ask for wisdom, courage and strength as we labor not only for ourselves but also for many to turn to God. Thanks to the SSPX who continue to inspire us by their ‘faith, hope and charity’ and whose holy priests by their hallowed hands touched many back to God when they came to Bacolod to say the Traditional Latin Mass: Fr. Benoit Wailliez, Fr. Loren Gerspacher, Fr. Adam Purdy, Fr. Joseph Lester, Fr. Aurelio Cacho, Fr. Albert Ghela, Fr. Sayed Elias, Fr. Carlo Magno Saa and Fr. Edgardo Suelo. God bless us all! N.S.”

Meantime, at the Novitiate, the formation of the brothers continues as usual. One of the extraordinary tasks accomplished so well by the brothers has been the weekly catechism program for the neighboring children. The brothers have been working on this program during the whole of the school year. In May, it is a Filipino custom, called the “Flores de Mayo” to have the catechism taught every day. A special schedule will be arranged for that month, and many children may turn out for the daily catechism, benediction and rosary, followed by Mass. In the meantime, pray for our little group growing at the Novitiate. I give some photos of our catechism children for your enjoyment.

In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Purdy
